Colorado is a state doing battle with alcohol abuse. With a population of just over five million people, 2.4 million of them drink alcohol. One in five binge drink every month.

This consumption results in treatment admission rates for alcohol abuse that far exceed those of the US. Those under 18 years of age prefer marijuana as the addictive drug that will drive them into rehab, but above 18, alcohol leads in every age group. Alcohol is the leader by far across every ethnic group in the state.

While it’s typical for denial to be part of the alcoholism picture, Coloradans seem to take this pattern to an extreme. Only ten percent of Coloradans who go to treatment for alcohol addiction reach out for treatment. The others are referred by the courts or community organizations. In fact, this pattern holds true across all types of addiction to substances. Overwhelmingly, the main reason people do not get treatment is because they do not seek it out, failing to recognize the signs of alcoholism or drug addiction in themselves.

Far Too Few Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers in Colorado

In all of Colorado, there are 389 drug rehabilitation centers. According to federal surveys, there are 379,000 people in the state who are dependent on or abusing alcohol, who need treatment. Even if every single person could somehow find their way to a rehab program, this would mean that each program would need to process 1,000 alcoholics per year to service them all – an impossibility as most programs are small out-patient programs. Some programs simply offer methadone or buprenorphine-assisted treatment programs for opiate addiction or out-patient counseling.

As it is, every year, 365,000 people fail to get the treatment they need for alcohol addiction. This includes 27,000 young people between the ages of 12 and 20. This is not surprising when 117,000 young people binge drink at least once a month.

While alcohol consumption levels stay at higher levels than the rest of the country, alcohol-related deaths have paradoxically been on the decline. But those in Larimer, Mesa and Fremont counties still don’t have any reason to celebrate. Their alcohol deaths increased 100 percent between 2008 and 2009. Statewide, there were more than 600 traffic crashes in 2008 that could be attributed to alcohol abuse.
